Leave no Trace: Protecting the Trails we Love
One of the best things about trail running and walking in the UK is how accessible nature can feel. From the rolling hills of the Chiltern Hills to the open ridgelines of the South Downs and the peaceful stretches of the Thames path, our trails offer space to move, reset and reconnect with the outdoors.
But with more people exploring the countryside than ever before, protecting these landscapes matters. That’s where the Leave No Trace principles come in - a simple mindset that helps us enjoy the outdoors responsibly while preserving it for others.
Stay on Established Paths
Many UK trails pass through delicate habitats, farmland and protected countryside. Sticking to established footpaths helps prevent erosion, protects wildlife and respects local landowners.
In places like chalk grasslands and woodland trails, repeated off-trail use can quickly damage vegetation and widen paths unnecessarily.
Take Your Litter Home
This one sounds obvious, but even small items like gel wrappers, tissues and fruit peel can impact the environment and spoil the experience for others. A simple rule: if you brought it with you, take it home with you.
Carrying a small zip pouch for rubbish during runs or walks is a good trick to make this easy.
Respect Wildlife and Livestock
Many UK routes cross working farmland or protected habitats. Keep noise low, leave gates as you find them and give animals space. If you’re running with dogs, follow local signage carefully, particularly during lambing season or in areas with ground-nesting birds.
Leave Nature As You Found It
Avoid picking flowers, moving stones or disturbing natural features. The small details are part of what makes these places special. Good outdoor etiquette helps preserve the sense of wildness and calm that people come to the trails to experience.
Be Considerate of Others
Trails are shared spaces. Slowing down when passing walkers, saying hello and respecting quieter areas all contribute to a better outdoor culture. The UK countryside works best when everyone feels welcome and respected.
Small Actions Matter
Leave No Trace is about being mindful outdoors and developing simple habits that help protect the landscapes we all enjoy exploring on foot.
At Stridely, we believe adventure and responsibility go hand in hand. Looking after the trails means future weekends, future runners and future walkers can enjoy the same experience for years to come.
